Patricia Leavy earned her PhD in Sociology at Boston College in 2002. She spent a decade as an Associate Professor of Sociology at Stonehill College in Massachusetts where she also served as Founding Director of the Gender Studies Program and the Chairperson of the Sociology & Criminology Department. She is now a full-time researcher, novelist and public speaker. Dr. Leavy has spent over a decade conducting interview research with women on topics pertaining to their identities. She is the author of the novel Low-Fat Love (Sense Publishers, 2011) which explores women’s identity-development in the context of popular culture and the forthcoming novel, American Circumstance (Sense Publishers, 2013). As a research methodologist and arts-based researcher she has also published ten nonfiction books including: Essentials of Transdisciplinary Research Practice: Using Problem-Centered Methodologies (Left Coast Press, 2011) and Method Meets Art: Arts-Based Research Practice (Guilford, 2009). Her next book, Fiction as Research Practice (Left Coast Press) is due out in April 2013. She is also the editor for the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Qualitative Research and is currently serving as editor for three book series (Understanding Qualitative Research, Oxford University Press; Social Fictions, Sense Publishers and Teaching Gender, Sense Publishers). Dr. Leavy has appeared on national television (for example, Glenn Beck and Lou Dobbs Tonight) and is regularly quoted in international, national and local print news (for example, The New York Times, USA Today, The Boston Globe, The LA Times). She frequently publishes op-ed and by-line articles and is a regular blogger for The Huffington Post. Dr. Leavy used to host a weekly internet radio show about women and relationships on PWRTalk internet radio and offers lectures on a variety of women’s interest topics as well as arts-based research. In recognition of her contributions to the discipline of sociology The New England Sociological Association named Dr. Leavy the 2010 “New England Sociologist of the Year.” Dr. Leavy frequently presents at national and international conferences, has been asked to serve as a plenary speaker at several prestigious conferences and for Women’s International Day 2012 served on a 4-person panel that included US Treasurer, Rosie Rios.
