This week I’m so inspired by Ingrid Nilsen. She shared a video about her coming out journey that is really sweet and beautiful. Nilsen courageously wore her heart on her sleeve talking about the inner struggle she experienced.
When a friend or family member shares their inner being, let’s be there for them. How can we show the people in our lives even more love and more compassion? That’s the question I want to ask you today.
Here are some ideas:
1) Practice active listening to really show you care about what they are saying.
2) Be there. Spend time with the people in your life that you know might be challenged by life.
3) If you can’t be there physically, be there virtually. What a miracle that we can Skype and FaceTime and talk face to face over the interwebs.
4) If someone shares a milestone like Ingrid did, how amazing would that person feel to get a sweet gift to commemorate and congratulate them?
Something like: a homemade card, a Happy Coming Out cake, a You Are Amazing ornament for the tree around the holidays, a pillow that has a saying about love, a photo book with pictures of happy times together and of the person being themselves, a fun day out doing something joyful like visiting water park or going rollerblading.
How much would you appreciate extra love and attention on a special occasion like coming out or revealing that you are transgender (ala Caitlyn Jenner)? Imagine what it is like for your friend or family member. Put yourself in their shoes. What would it feel like? And what would ease that journey and make it joyful?
You can be a positive force for those you care about! Take the time and show up for others.
