Eating Disorders Research

Given that it is national Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) here in the USA I’m doing my part to raise awareness of so many of the issues. A big one is Eating Disorders Research…or the lack thereof.

We have some wonderful people around the world doing some fantastic work in the field and for those of us who love someone fighting one of these deadly illnesses it is imperative that we do all we can to make some noise and get more research done.

I was very happy today to see on a tweetchat that Dr. Cynthia Bulik at UNC said the tweetchat inspired her to do more research! That gives me hope! So does seeing the latest blog post from our new F.E.A.S.T. Executive Director, Leah Dean on Research. Leah recently attended the semi-annual NIMH Alliance for Research Progress Meeting in Washington DC. Here she learned the 6 Key Elements that families of those with AIDS have employed in their successful efforts to garner more research.  you can read more on the F.E.A.S.T. website and decide how you would like to be involved in adding your voice and talents to this world wide community effort.

I’m encouraged to hear Leah talking about the evidence that we cannot do this alone. We must come together as a world-wide community and

work together against these deadly illnesses.  This has been my goal with the AED & Hope Network “1 Family/$1″ Drive for Eating Disorders Research. There are over 70 million people in the world with eating disorders, and if every person who cares about those folks donates $1 there will be plenty for research scholarships.

It’s a lofty effort, but I know the passion and tenacity that caregivers of those with eating disorders have and we can do this. Together.
