Just like with healing our body, healing our homes, our cities, and our earth after a natural disaster with devastating repercussions requires tremendous communal support and uplifting artistic energy. That is why We Are the Real Deal is the perfect space to announce an exciting upcoming event in which I’ll be performing on Thursday, December 20 at 11:30 p.m. at Joe’s Pub in New York City.
As a New York City-based artist, eating disorder recovery advocate, and recovered individual, I have thought a lot these past weeks about the similarities between eating disorder recovery and disaster relief. Without pushing the analogy, without over exploring and making any insensitive connections, I know that no matter what, both involved tremendous patience, love, and compassion, and both are much easier, much more lasting, much more fulfilling when there is art involved.
The incredible line-up includes: muMs (“Poet” from the HBO series OZ); Mahogany Browne (host of the Cafe’s legendary Friday Night Slam); Jive Poetic (DJ and host of the Nuyo’s Slam Open); poet Caroline Rothstein (whose video “Fat” was recently tweeted by Lady Gaga); poet, actress and vocalist La Bruja; Nuyo Slam Team alums Bryonn Bain and Whitney “Witness” Greenway; vocalists Aurora Rose and Melodie Nicholson; and poets Caits Meissner andQueen Godis. USA Today recommends the Nuyorican Poets Cafe as one of the top cultural attractions in downtown Manhattan, and The Wall Street Journal says the Cafe has grown “from a small, volunteer-led venue to a thriving arts center.”
