#10: Cherish the First Bite!
This is the ninth of 108 tips to Livin’ the Moment. Let’s take back our lives one beautiful, funny and delicious moment at a time.
#10 of 108: Cherish the First Bite!
For years, I have taught workshops on mindfully eating a piece of chocolate or slowly savoring a glass of wine.
But anyone who really knows me will tell you…I’m a F#CKING PIG!
In fact, my friends in college made fun of me because I’m an Italian Jew so I eat with both an Italian passion for food, and a Jewish fear that somebody is gonna take the food away from me. A lethal combo.
So that being said, here’s a challenge for me…and you.
Slow down and remember…as scientists AND foodies will tell you…
…the most delicious bite is ALWAYS the first bite.
As reported in this past Sunday’s NY Times and most famously summarized by food writer Michael Pollan,
“The banquet is in the first bite.”
Before you dig in to that next scoop of peanut butter chocolate fudge swirl or (vegetarian yogis hold your breath) Colorado Lamb with Roasted Loin, Spiced-Smoked Rib, Merguez Sausage, Eggplant, Chickpeas, and Feta (which I enjoyed last night at a restaurant called Hearth)….
…take a really deep breath and remember…
…how you eat says much about how you live.
PS: This does not hold true for a Drumstick ice cream cone in which case the last bite is always the best because you get that little piece of chocolate in the bottom of the cone.
