Vogue Magazine … Pact to Pledge.
On May 3, 2012, Vogue Magazine announced its health initiative … a pact between the 19 international editors of Vogue to encourage a healthier approach to body image. The international issues of Vogue jointly pledge – among other things – to
“work with models who, in our view, are healthy and help to promote a healthy body image”
“be ambassadors for the message of healthy body image”
WATRD certainly applauds this leadership move, but we wonder how this will actually play out.
Have they made a pact, or is this just political posturing … what do you think?
I, for one, am curious to learn what Vogue’s definitions of “healthy” body image are (wouldn’t that be fascinating!!??) and if their definitions will include continuing in the practice of air-brushing models, for example?
Does this mean that 19 editions of Vogue will really begin photographing healthy models with real, diverse figures? Will they show real wrinkles, moles, freckles, a roll of “real goodness,” or real cellulite? Where and how will they draw the lines of beauty … or will they?
If all 19 editions are really serious about the “pact” to make a difference in a meaningful way, then we invite them to take the Real Deal pledge and BE the ambassadors of progress they aspire to be.
