I am woman, hear me roar

I know it’s supposed to be what’s inside that matters most — and I’m a firm believer in that.
But while it might sound ridiculously superficial, sometimes just putting on a single pair of shoes or piece of clothing can change your entire outlook.
It could be something as simple as a flowy scarf your sister gave you, a leather coat you got in Italy … or as decadent as a couture gown or a pair of Manolos.
The key to its fabulousness — whatever it is — is that it’s your signature item. Uniquely yours.
No matter what kind of mood I’m in, when I slip on my favorite pair of jeans,ย I feel like I can rule the world. Seriously.
Even when I’m bloated, feeling sad … they make me feel like a queen. All my body image issues go away when I put these babies on.
They fit higher on my waist than other jeans, so there’s no concern about exposing any skin if I bend over to get something on the floor.
They are just the right length (no alterations needed; love the petite fit for someone with short stubs for legs, like me!).
I can dress these jeans up for work or a date night with my husband (I seriously can’t wear these jeans without getting a loving butt-pinch from my hubby!) or dress them down for a casual Sunday BBQ.
And best of all, they’re a size up from my “skinny jeans” … which means I don’t need to squeeze myself into them.
No, no. In these jeans, I am woman, here me roar!
In these jeans, I feel like I can tackle anything. And that feels pretty damn good.
How about you? Do you have a signature piece of clothing that makes you feel like a queen?
WATRD
It’s funny, because I’ve been thinking about this for the last few days. There’s a TV show (Dress my Nest) that really set me off. The idea is that the designer comes in, asks you to bring out 3 items of your personal style from your closet and three other items to help him get a grasp on who you are and design your room.
I don’t have three pieces in my closet that represent me.
I don’t have one.
What I have is a lot of second hand workout gear that I got just because it fit and was cheap, two pairs of pants for work (in uniform colors, but only white T-shirts to go with them) and a pair of jeans I don’t quite fit into yet.
Earlier this year I was buying clothing that I liked for the first time in a decade or so. Somewhere along the line I slipped back into putting everyone (and everything) else first again.
This weekend I’m going shopping. I’m going to buy items I like. I deserve to feel good in my clothing.
Fab Kate–you absolutely do deserve to buy items you like, that make you feel good!! It might sound vain to some, but seriously, sometimes just a special top or pair of jeans can make your day! I’m wearing my fave jeans today — amen!
FabKate, everyone deserves clothes that make them feel special and wonderful -I hope you find some great pieces on your shopping trip.
I don’t have one piece in mind, but I do know what style works for me when I’m just not feelin’ it.
When I had gained some weight, I swiped up a lot of tank tops and other shirts with an empire waist line (I’m horrible with fashion! The style that is fitted right below the chest?). I’ve found when I gain weight, strangely I don’t gain an ounce in my arms. So if I’m feeling bloated or blah, I put on one of those shirts and try to focus on my arms. Does the trick everytime. ๐
Holly, that is awesome that you have found something that really works for you regardless of the scale. And having hot arms to rock — you go, girl!!
Lissa, aren’t Joe’s Provocateur’s great? I have my favorite pair on right now (in Camille). I was so mad after I got them in the mail, though -still had to get them hemmed! The indignities us shorties face.
These are my jeans that make me saunter just a little when I walk. And one of the few pairs of jeans I own that actually make my billboard butt look a little rounded.
Also, I have an orange wool coat from Miss Sixty that I bought last year. I had wanted a wool coat for a while, and headed out to Burlington Coat Factory expecting to buy a nice appropriate neutral color. But damn – when I saw this orange coat I just started smiling. It made me happy just looking at it. I put it on, and I knew wearing it would make me even happier. And it does.
LOVE IT, AlaskaJoey. I’m 5’5 and a half, but I have short, thick legs so these jeans were the perfect hem-line for kitten heels. I’m rockin’ them today ๐ I have Rocker’s in Camille ๐ Love Joe’s jeans — they flatter curves like none other. So glad to find another Joe’s fan!
for me it is GLASSES not clothing.
