Is Your Definition of Healthy Eating Keeping You From Doing It?
Have you sworn off dieting but still seem to struggle with healthy eating? It could be the way you define the term. In the Redefining Healthy Eating class I teach at Green Mountain at Fox Run, I ask women what comes to mind when I say the words "healthy eating." While more and more frequently I hear words like "fresh" and "feel good," I still all too often hear words like "restrictive" or "boring" or "doesn't taste good." When we explore the foods that bring to mind those latter descriptors, it's usually foods that are low in fat, sugar, salt...and taste. Foods ...
Physical Empowerment rather than Impediment, through Acting
I am so honored to have serendipitously met Robyn Hussa and for her to be producing our Peer Gynt Project. This theatre project came out of my artistic and personal relationship with Neil Hancock, a talented actor from Stratford, England, whom I met when studying Shakespeare at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. Neil’s exploration of theatre and film from his hometown of Stratford result in his strong imagination and a mastery of classical text, from which I continue to develop as an artist by working with him. We left our studies knowing we wanted to work together, my ...
Weight of the Notion
On May 7th, while still basking in the afterglow of International No Diet Day, The New York Times published a series of opinion pieces called Women, Weight, and Wellness that stirred up a great deal of discussion, debate, and commentary on the topic of...well...women, weight, and wellness! (Imagine that?!) Seeing size acceptance and HAES points of view so prominently represented was uplifting to say the least and my emotional stock was up! Reading the comment section, however, made it clear that there is little debate over the existence of a powerful disdain towards fat people in this country. Stock down. The following night, ...
Time is a waisting…
I just returned from Michigan due to a sudden death in my family. Honestly, there is nothing like an event like this to put things in perspective. Our bodies are so much more than circumference and pounds. They are literally vessels for our spirit and allow us to hold hug, support and love each other in THIS realm. I don't typically blog about my spiritual beliefs and I won't start now. But one thing I know for certain, face to face, eye to eye, hug to hug contact disappears when someone dies. Our bodies are miraculous. They give us the capacity to ...
Exhorting Obese People to Eat Less and Exercise More Doesn’t Work
In Gary Taubes' article "The New Obesity Campaigns Have it All Wrong" in the May 14, 2012 issue of Newsweek, he points out some refreshing facts that help shed light on our country's obsession with thinking that obesity is caused from "gluttony and sloth" or an imbalance of energy / food intake. He cites Hilda Bruch, the physician who in 1934 pointed out that many children in New York City were obese during the time of the Great Depression -- a time when few families could afford food. If the children weren't able to get food (or much food), why, ...
